MULTIDYNE DEBUTS POWERFUL, HIGH-DENSITY LIGHTCUBE AT NAB 2010

April 6th, 2010

MultiDyne - LiGHTCuBE

New Solution Offers Up to 80 HD Signals and Option for a Signal Generator and HD Monitors

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 6, 2010MultiDyne, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport and routing solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, will unveil its brand new LiGHTCuBE fiber optic field transport system at this year’s NAB (Booth C7637). In addition, MultiDyne will also introduce the option for an HD or composite signal generator as well as HD monitors on the LiGHTCuBE, giving broadcasters unprecedented ability to test and monitor signals in the field.

Capable of housing any product in the MultiDyne product line, the LiGHTCuBE represents the company’s most customizable, rugged and high-density solution to date. Designed for the fiber optic field transport of composite, HD video, PL, IFB, audio and more, the LiGHTCuBE can be configured for as many as 80 HD-SDI, SDI or composite video paths, with 225 AES or analog audio channels. The LiGHTCuBE is also compatible with DVI, RGB and HDMI and is AC and fully battery powered.

In addition, the new test and monitor features make the LiGHTCuBE especially effective for in-the-field signal monitoring. With an HD monitor and signal generator on either end of the product, users can test the circuit even if the camera has not arrived. Further, the HD test signal generator option also allows users to send the test pattern down the line, or to send the signal from the studio end directly to the LiGHTCuBE. This function allows users to monitor the camera output and the signals arriving at the shoot, and can be added to any solution in MultiDyne’s LiGHTBoX product line.

“With our new LiGHTCuBE, the options for the end-user are virtually limitless,” says Frank Jachetta, senior vice president of sales and operations for MultiDyne. “Not only does the LiGHTCuBE hold more HD, analog video and audio signals than any other solution in our product line, it is also extremely customizable, even by the end-user. Our new test and monitor features provide even more value. Customers who were creating their own makeshift flyaway case to house many video signals will finally have access to a smaller, cost-effective and extremely high-quality solution for all their fiber optic transport needs.”

A major benefit also lies in the LiGHTCuBE’s size. Though this solution is heavy on HD and audio signals, the LiGHTCuBEv is a compact and extremely portable 14-inch cube design, making it small enough for sports and ENG, an announce booth setting, as well as any field application where signal density is a must. Additional carry handles allow users to “grab-and-go” for remote or on-location broadcasts. A weather resistant cover is also available.

The LiGHTCuBE is exceptionally versatile and can be used in a number of different broadcast and pro A/V situations. It is ideal for applications including large-scale outdoor arena sporting events where a user requires a rugged, highly weather-proof solution for handling massive amounts of HD signals. The LiGHTCuBE is also a perfect fit for users transporting high-density audio; for example, in a live symphony or orchestra broadcast setting with over 60 microphones, the LiGHTCuBE can manage audio bottlenecks, transporting signals seamlessly to an OB van or studio.

The LiGHTCuBE can be linked using tactical or conventional fiber to any MultiDyne solution, including the DVM-2500, HD-1500, HD-3000, HDMI-ONE, DVI-6000 as well as many non-MultiDyne products. In addition, the LiGHTCuBE offers users intercom, PL, IFB and belt pack support.  For more information on the LiGHTCuBE and its optional test and monitor features, please visit the MultiDyne website at: http://www.multidyne.com/productdetail.cfm?ProductID=247.

multidyne-silverbulletLOCUST VALLEY, NY/LONDON, DECEMBER 18, 2009 – MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport and routing solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, is loading up UK’s One Box Television with its  SilverBULLET Mini 3G HD/SDI fiber optic link. One Box Television, an innovative UK multi camera gallery facilities rental company, purchased the extremely lightweight, tiny transmitter and receiver modules through MultiDyne’s exclusive distributor in the UK, Bright Space Technologies.

With recent rentals to premier broadcast networks including the BBC, West End Productions and large corporations like Sony, One Box Television was looking to upgrade its equipment to further incorporate the most sophisticated HD solutions on the market into its custom-made, “One Box” broadcast rental system. As the system is used for remote productions, One Box Television selected the SilverBULLET 3G fiber optic links for their ability to transport 3G signals over long distances on a single mode of fiber, their ease of portability and their extremely compact size.

“By combining the SilverBULLET modules with our other technology, the on-camera boxes now allow full vision control of HD cameras over 100 metres, as well as feeding time code, talkback and reverse vision,” says Richard Stevenson, founder of One Box Television. “The product revolutionizes the stability of our pictures, and has allowed much longer cable runs than were previously available to us over coax cable.”

Designed for quick and easy installation, the SilverBULLET supports transmission across SMPTE 424M 2.97 Gbps, SMPTE 292M 1.485 Gbps and SMPTE 259M 270 Mbps standards regardless of format. The transmitter modules also include equalization for long lengths of coaxial cable, further easing the installation process as users can incorporate the SilverBULLET at any point in the HD/SDI chain. With error free pathological pattern operation, low system jitter and embedded audio support, the SilverBULLET provides a typical link distance of up to 30 km (18.6 miles).

“The SilverBULLET is an ideal addition to London’s One Box Television’s existing custom rental package,” says Frank Jachetta, senior vice president of sales and operations for MultiDyne. “We’re pleased that companies from around the world look to Bright Space Technologies and MultiDyne to provide state-of-the-art equipment for their system upgrades, and as rental companies look for new ways to stay ahead of their competitors in 2010, they can rely on our full product line to provide the most cost-effective, reliable and long-lasting products on the market.”

Increased demand for 1080p HD video requires an innovation in fibre optic video transport tools contends Jim Jachetta, senior vice president of engineering and product development, MultiDyne

By Jim Jachetta,

Jim Jachetta, SVP of Engineering

Jim Jachetta, SVP of Engineering

Senior Vice President of Engineering and Product Development

With the pressure to deliver content in high definition, the world of video transport is dramatically changing. From a broadcast engineer picking out equipment that will save the most time and space in a studio, to a consumer watching a soccer game at home – everyone wants more out of video. Due to this demand, we are seeing the convergence of different video transport methods across industries. High resolution standards that were previously pigeon-holed as “broadcast-only” are now becoming more widely used in every install. We are dealing with a more educated client who is interested in 1080p HD video at home and at work. Manufacturers in this space need to speed up innovation and the range of the solutions they offer in order to give users added value when it comes to HD.

In the past, designers have made a choice early on in system configuration, catering to either a pro A/V, DVI standard as the main backbone to a solution, or a 3G SMPTE broadcast standard. Now, due to customer demand, we are developing tools that have fiber optic video transport capabilities over both standards depending on the application. One such offering, the DVI-6000, which we will be showcasing at IBC 2009, offers breakthroughs in DVI and RGB over a SMPTE compliant 3G data transport.

MultiDyne has been contracted to work on a major hospitality project in Las Vegas which exemplifies the demand for solutions that address both broadcast and pro A/V requirements. Within the 67 acre city-within-a-city campus, there are retail facilities, a condo hotel, casino resort and 300,000 square feet of technologically advanced meeting and convention space. The entire campus features a fiber optic video backbone capable of 1080p 3G HD-SDI transport. The facility is capable of broadcasting live events from any of the meeting rooms or theaters to a broadcast production truck outside, and the convention center features high-tech screens, projectors and digital signage that require a DVI signal. This multi-acre campus is a banner example of how innovations in fiber optic technology must and can be used across many different applications, formats and resolutions due to the new flexibility in fiber optic gear and optical routing switchers. The MultiDyne EOS-4000 switcher is another perfect example of this as it switches in the light domain, it is able to effortlessly transition between 3G SMPTE and DVI, allowing the user to transport any signal they require.

Fiber optic video transport solutions only continue to be more reliable than competing options. We are actively breaking the constraints of video transport over copper, allowing customers to route and send video further over a single fiber. Fiber optic solutions also allow users to “future proof” their design, with bandwidth potential for innovation over 10G. When designing a complex system using copper, all cabling has to be perfect. If a user squeaked by using copper for 3G, they will be inoperable when the “next big thing” comes along.

It is important to note that MultiDyne’s path to innovation does not end with the advancements made for video transport using the DVI-6000. We are actively designing products that will take advantage of 6G technology, leading to 10G capability. The convergence of video transport demands over several markets also continues to drive us forward. For MultiDyne, the key to not only surviving but thriving in the economic downturn has been to diversify across the broadcast, pro A/V, military and government markets. Our DVI-6000, which can be used across all of these sectors, is in line with this strategy. As IBC is one of our most important shows every year – not only to reach the European market but to meet with U.S. customers, integrators and consultants as well – we’re excited to spend time with our customers, continuing to introduce them to our products which break boundaries when it comes to DVI and 3G HD-SDI video transport.

Vegas broadcaster upgrades Stratosphere fiber link

LAS VEGAS – The Stratosphere observation tower is one of Las Vegas’ signature landmarks, with its restaurants and high altitude thrill rides. At 1,149 feet, the tower, which is the tallest free-standing observation tower in the United States, also serves as camera platform and microwave receive site for local television stations.

KTNV the local ABC affiliate, and owned by Journal Broadcast Group of Milwaukee, Wis., has long had an analog camera and microwave receiveratop the structure, with a single-mode fiber link to its studios several miles away. To get more utility out of the fiber link as part of its BAS upgrade to a new MRC Central Receiver, the station installed a MultiDyne CWDM (Coarse Wave-Division Multiplexer) 2000 system.

“MultiDyne offers Journal cost effective and reliable ways to transmit multiple signal types over a single fiber link,” said Ron Adair, director of television engineering for the Journal Broadcast Group. “That enables us to have Ethernet control of the system without the need of separate phone lines.”

MULTIPLE WAVELENGTHS
MultiDyne’s CWDM system uses advances in laser and thin film technology that have made it economically possible to provide up to 18 different wavelengths on a single fiber, separating them by 20nm. “The CWDM2000 is basically a passive device,” said Bob McAlpine, MultiDyne vice president of Global Sales & BusinessDevelopment in Locust Valley, N.Y. “It is set up to multiplex many different wavelengths of light into a single fiberpath. The criterion for the design was to provide the correct signal functionality over the existing single fiber line.”

The station chose an eight channel CWDM-2000-8 for the job, which provides them with three spare channels. The CWDM-2000 is available configured for 4, 8, 12, 16 and 18 wavelengths, and with a pair of de-multiplexers, it could support 18 channels in each direction.

“There’s essentially four links going through this fiber,” said Scott Michaels, customer service manager for systems integrator Heartland Video Services of Plymouth, Wis., which designed and installed the MultiDyne system for the station. “We’re multiplexing Ethernet capability between the studio and their site up there, we’re multiplexing analog video and audio from the existing camera, and then we’re taking back ASI from that central receive site.”~

FUTURE PROOFED
Michaels gives high marks to the flexibility of MultiDyne’s modular design. “One of the beauties of MultiDyne is that it’s got a bunch of modules, and you can mix and match those to meet your specific requirements. So we were able to get Ethernet, analog video and audio, ASI, and leading edge 3-Gig HD-SDI fiber transport.”

Where previously control of the receive site and camera was via four
wire modem communication, and the video and audio path were limited, control is now handled via Ethernet. MultiDyne EM316SW-XY transceiversare installed at both the Stratosphere and studio ends.

An HD-3000 transmitter on the tower and receiver module at the studios will allow KTNV to install a high definition camera at its Stratosphere location, and is future-proofed to 3 GHz when there’s need to deliver 1080/60p video.

A DTV-120 transmitter at the towerand receiver at the station are used to carry the ASI signal from the MRC central receiver back to the studios, and a DVM-2000 transmitter and receiver are used for the analog videoand audio from the current camera onthe tower. In all, the installation occupies five rack units of space.

Prior to shipping the equipment, MultiDyne engineers configure the CWDM-2000 units to the specified laser wavelengths. Since some users are accessing dark fiber and have no idea whether it is of the single-or multi-mode type, the CWDM units can be set up to handle either of them.

A coarse wavelength-division multiplex system uses uncooled lasers, which are relatively inexpensive compared with the cooled lasers necessary for DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing). The DWDM systems require such temperature control because individual wavelength channels are set only 3nm apart, which allows them to pass over 100 wavelength channels over a single fiber optic path.

The Stratosphere is the tallest free standing observation tower in the United States and home to microwave operations for Las Vegas stations.
