New Solution Offers Up to 80 HD Signals and Option for a Signal Generator and HD Monitors

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 6, 2010 – MultiDyne, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport and routing solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, will unveil its brand new LiGHTCuBE fiber optic field transport system at this year’s NAB (Booth C7637). In addition, MultiDyne will also introduce the option for an HD or composite signal generator as well as HD monitors on the LiGHTCuBE, giving broadcasters unprecedented ability to test and monitor signals in the field.

Capable of housing any product in the MultiDyne product line, the LiGHTCuBE represents the company’s most customizable, rugged and high-density solution to date. Designed for the fiber optic field transport of composite, HD video, PL, IFB, audio and more, the LiGHTCuBE can be configured for as many as 80 HD-SDI, SDI or composite video paths, with 225 AES or analog audio channels. The LiGHTCuBE is also compatible with DVI, RGB and HDMI and is AC and fully battery powered.

In addition, the new test and monitor features make the LiGHTCuBE especially effective for in-the-field signal monitoring. With an HD monitor and signal generator on either end of the product, users can test the circuit even if the camera has not arrived. Further, the HD test signal generator option also allows users to send the test pattern down the line, or to send the signal from the studio end directly to the LiGHTCuBE. This function allows users to monitor the camera output and the signals arriving at the shoot, and can be added to any solution in MultiDyne’s LiGHTBoX product line.

“With our new LiGHTCuBE, the options for the end-user are virtually limitless,” says Frank Jachetta, senior vice president of sales and operations for MultiDyne. “Not only does the LiGHTCuBE hold more HD, analog video and audio signals than any other solution in our product line, it is also extremely customizable, even by the end-user. Our new test and monitor features provide even more value. Customers who were creating their own makeshift flyaway case to house many video signals will finally have access to a smaller, cost-effective and extremely high-quality solution for all their fiber optic transport needs.”

A major benefit also lies in the LiGHTCuBE’s size. Though this solution is heavy on HD and audio signals, the LiGHTCuBEv is a compact and extremely portable 14-inch cube design, making it small enough for sports and ENG, an announce booth setting, as well as any field application where signal density is a must. Additional carry handles allow users to “grab-and-go” for remote or on-location broadcasts. A weather resistant cover is also available.

The LiGHTCuBE is exceptionally versatile and can be used in a number of different broadcast and pro A/V situations. It is ideal for applications including large-scale outdoor arena sporting events where a user requires a rugged, highly weather-proof solution for handling massive amounts of HD signals. The LiGHTCuBE is also a perfect fit for users transporting high-density audio; for example, in a live symphony or orchestra broadcast setting with over 60 microphones, the LiGHTCuBE can manage audio bottlenecks, transporting signals seamlessly to an OB van or studio.

The LiGHTCuBE can be linked using tactical or conventional fiber to any MultiDyne solution, including the DVM-2500, HD-1500, HD-3000, HDMI-ONE, DVI-6000 as well as many non-MultiDyne products. In addition, the LiGHTCuBE offers users intercom, PL, IFB and belt pack support. For more information on the LiGHTCuBE and its optional test and monitor features, please visit the MultiDyne website at: http://www.multidyne.com/productdetail.cfm?ProductID=247.

Clear-Com® and RTS® Two- To- Four Wire Intercom Bridge

Orlando, FL, June 24, 2009 – MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, introduces the COMMS-2000 Two Wire to Four Wire Intercom Interface at InfoComm 2009 (Booth 4629).

The COMMS-2000 interface allows for the conversion of a single channel of standard or TW party-line intercom to four-wire audio, while also converting call signals to RS-422 data. It also offers the capability to convert the signal back to its original form. The resulting audio and RS-422 data from the COMMS-2000 can then be sent to a Clear-Com Matrix port, fiber optic converter such as the MultiDyne Fiber-Comms or connected to another COMMS-2000 over twisted-pair cable such as CAT-5E. With its excellent hybrid null, offering superior isolation between sender and caller audio, and wide-range level controls, the COMMS-2000 may also be used as a high-quality stand-alone two-to-four-wire converter. It is also a cost-effective integrated component for the LiGHTBoXTM field portable fiber optic transport system.

Ideal for touring situations, the COMMS-2000 offers a lightweight, compact size in a design that does not call for an additional power source, as the COMMS-2000 obtains its DC operating current through the party-line connection on pin two of its XLR connector. Long copper cable runs are no longer required as the COMMS-2000 utilizes lightweight UTP cables. When used with a Clear-Com Matrix system, the COMMS-2000 allows a party-line channel to be connected to the Matrix frame with up to 5000 feet of cable. The COMMS-2000 can easily be rack-mounted, with up to three units fitting across a standard 1-RU rack space.

For systems where only one or two party-line channels are needed, the COMMS-2000 is ideal. Simply run UTP cable from the Matrix frame to the COMMS-2000, which is connected to and powered by the party-line system. A rear panel dip-switch on the COMMS-2000 allows the four-wire audio and RS-422 data to be connected to the RJ-45 jack, instead of an all-inclusive, hardwired DB-15 connector, simplifying set-up.

“When combined with our new Fiber-Comms four wire optical extender for intercom and IFB, the COMMS-2000 becomes a vital component to our user’s intercom-over-fiber transport needs,” says Jim Jachetta, senior vice president of engineering and product development. “With more and more broadcast and AV setups incorporating intercom communications equipment, the COMMS-2000 allows for intercom connectivity through a standard analog audio fiber optic link.” In addition to its acting as a visual indicator, when used with two COMMS-2000 units, the call signaling function can be used to trigger relays or functions in other intercom equipment. An amber data LED provides the user with continuous status on the data link between two COMMS-2000 units and will indicate whether or not a proper link has been established. The COMMS-2000 also includes internal jumpers to select different baud rates for the RS-422 data.

ORLANDO, FL, JUNE 22, 2009 – MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, is introducing Fiber-Comms, a four-wire optical extender designed for intercom lines at InfoComm 2009 (Booth 4629). This advanced fiber optic extender seamlessly transports from one to eight intercom or IFB channels and can also transport control and signaling data.

Addressing the three key areas sought after by professionals in the A/V and broadcast industries, Fiber-Comms allows for greater data transport, over a lighter fiber cable and for a longer distance. When used in conjunction with the MultiDyne COMMS-2000 two-wire to four-wire converter, Fiber-Comms can extend a two-wire system. It is also a cost-effective integrated component for the LiGHTBoXTM field portable fiber optic transport system.

“Fiber-Comms allows for easy integration with the other products in MultiDyne’s innovative fiber optic solution line,” says Frank Jachetta, senior vice president of sales and operations. “Customers can order the Fiber-Comms extender with an XLR pigtail for configuration with the Clear-Com®, Studio Technologies® and RTS systems®, giving our users even more options for serial data transport over greater distances.”

The Fiber-Comms four-wire extender handles 24-bit audio flat from 20 to 20 KHz, a key feature that does not color the audio. It also has an S/N greater than 90 dB and a THD less than 0.05%. An optical budget of up to 24dB for single-mode further enhances the product’s audio capabilities. An optional eight separate intercom channels can also be used.

Fiber-Comms includes an XLR cable with a four-wire XLR input and output and is available in portable and rack-mount configurations.

New Three-Inch Modules Offer the Industry’s Broadest Range of Digital Rates

ORLANDO, FL, JUNE 17, 2009 – MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, is introducing the SilverBULLETTM Mini 3G HD/SDI fiber optic link at InfoComm 2009 (Booth 4629). This two-part, transceiver/receiver solution, designed for the transmission of SDI and HD-SDI TV signals over a single-mode fiber optic cable, maintains the signal quality that broadcasters demand – 5 Mbps to 3 Gbps. At just three inches in length, this cost-effective solution is ideal for a wide variety of pro A/V and broadcast applications, including video production and editing, ENG with additional uses for sports teleproduction, field production, remote camera links, cross-campus production, pre-fibered venues and courtesy feeds.

The tiny transmitter and receiver modules are portable, lightweight solutions for remote productions. Utilizing LED indicators to digitally display critical system diagnostic information including the Power On, HD/SDI signal presence and Received Optical Power levels, the SilverBULLET eliminates the need for the weight of additional test equipment. With error free pathological pattern operation, low system jitter and embedded audio support, the SilverBULLET provides a typical link distance of up to 18.6 miles (30 km).

“An economical solution for the fiber optic transport of 5 Mbps to 3 Gbps HDTV signals, the SilverBULLET is one of the broadcast industry’s smallest media adaptor solutions with the broadest range of digital rates,” says Jim Jachetta, senior vice president of engineering and product development. “It is a must-have for production at any location because it is a mobile solution that provides reliability and efficiency, all while continuing to meet our users’ high expectations for signal quality.”

Designed for quick and easy installation, the SilverBULLET supports transmission across SMPTE 424M 2.97 Gbps, SMPTE 292M 1.485 Gbps and SMPTE 259M 270 Mbps standards regardless of format. The transmitter modules also include equalization for long lengths of coaxial cable, further easing the installation process as users can incorporate the SilverBULLET at any point in the HD/SDI chain. Built for high durability, the SilverBULLET features an over-molded construction with a rugged “ST” simplex optical interface and 75 Ohm BNC (male) simplex electrical interface.

The SilverBULLET is compatible with any DC voltage from 5 to 16 volts with a four pin XLR. The jack also provides for SNMP monitoring, a critical component to network management.

The truck was purpose-designed from the get-go, and as a result is ideally suited for small regional productions such as local college sporting events, smaller corporate meetings, live performances, side-by-side productions and regional sport pickup.

LACKED BUILT-IN FIBER INTERFACE

One of the pieces of equipment we selected in the planning process for the truck was JVC’s GY-HD250 high-definition camcorder. We liked this particular model as it’s relatively inexpensive, yet produces very high quality video. However, the GY-HD250 does not have its own built-in fiber optic transport system. If we deployed it as received, this would have resulted in a somewhat limited range for transporting the camera’s video back to the Dotcom truck.

Also, at a lot of events, even if multicore copper cables had the video signal reach we needed, they’re just too constraining. At such productions as the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the X Games, we may have as many as five cameras shooting simultaneously throughout the venues and didn’t even want to think about hauling around that much multicore. Fiber was the only solution to getting the sort of versatility and flexibility that we’d planned for the truck. This is where our quest for the perfect fiber solution began.

Actually, it wasn’t much of a quest at all. The folks at MultiDyne had worked with us before on several special projects and had a reputation for delivering high quality video and for working with their customers to make sure that they got exactly what they wanted. One call was all it took.

LIGHTBOX SOLUTION

When we made that call, we learned that MultiDyne had just launched a new product—the Lightbox, a battery-powered, bidirectional field fiber transport system for SD and HD video, audio and data signals.

In addition to extending the video reach of the JVC GY-HD250’s multicore cable tether, we also had some special needs. It wasn’t long before we got together for a few engineering planning sessions with MultiDyne and set forth our requirements. It wasn’t that long before the company had created a Lightbox system that not only did everything that we needed, but also one that fit within our budget.

The MultiDyne Lightbox has proven to be both cost effective and a reliable team player. These attributes have allowed us to both provide excellent quality video and to pass the savings on to our clients.

The unit has really come through for us in a big way. The Lightbox has already saved us a lot of time and effort in setting up for field production.

MultiDyne’s standard Lightbox is already very versatile, but with the added features we asked for and received, it just really doesn’t get much better. We think that we are very lucky to find a company that would go the extra mile to customize their product for our needs.

Kurt Heitmann has been an entertainment sound engineer since 1981, winning three Emmy Awards in the process. Kurt is now the president of Total RF Productions and the senior vice president of sales and marketing for both Total RF and CP Communications.
Mar 4, 2009 – 5:04:46 PM

To be successful at any major event, you must have the right team and right equipment in place. To win at a Bobsled World Championship event, you must also have the ability and will to tackle the elements and the course. Red House Mobile Productions (formerly Dotcom Mobile) did just that for German television broadcasters ARD and ZDF at this year’s World Championships in Lake Placid, NY. The 27-ft. HD-1 mobile-production truck was used by FIBT to help both ARD and ZDF cover the event.

The truck was located approximately 750 ft. away from the main finish deck. “We just made park and power before the weather started. It snowed for six straight days!” says Kurt Heitmann, president of Total RF Productions. “The snow never stopped, and that makes for a tough setup. And the temps were hovering around 10 degrees all week.”

JVC HD250 Camera signals were transmitted bidirectionally with the new Multidyne LiGHTBoX system. “We worked closely with Multidyne to engineer these Light Boxes for our JVC HD250 cameras,” says Heitmann. “They worked flawlessly in very extreme weather, and we are very pleased.”

Total RF Productions, which runs Red House Mobile Productions, also provided all the fiber for the POV cameras on the course. “Alex Milton, the main host tech manager, and FIBT put out 20-plus HD POV cams for this event,” says Heitmann, “and they had really great course coverage.”

ZDF was very specific and very organized with its signal-flow requirements. The broadcaster provided two EVS machines that were installed in a trailer next to the truck, and Total RF created operator positions on the second and third bench in the truck. All audio was embedded in the trucks; a Harris router and the EVS machines were used for the main part of the show.

“ZDF likes to isolate their reporters and tape segments while they have the main show feed on the air,” says Heitmann. “ZDF also built out an Avid edit room that was also in our router. We took embedded audio and video from the main host truck and added that into the router as well.” Heitmann says this type of show is why the truck was built. “There is no need for a 53-ft. expando when a show is taking live feeds and adding three to five cameras,” he says. “This truck is perfect for that.”
