MULTIDYNE DEBUTS POWERFUL, HIGH-DENSITY LIGHTCUBE AT NAB 2010

April 6th, 2010

MultiDyne - LiGHTCuBE

New Solution Offers Up to 80 HD Signals and Option for a Signal Generator and HD Monitors

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 6, 2010MultiDyne, a premier provider of fiber optic-based video and audio transport and routing solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, will unveil its brand new LiGHTCuBE fiber optic field transport system at this year’s NAB (Booth C7637). In addition, MultiDyne will also introduce the option for an HD or composite signal generator as well as HD monitors on the LiGHTCuBE, giving broadcasters unprecedented ability to test and monitor signals in the field.

Capable of housing any product in the MultiDyne product line, the LiGHTCuBE represents the company’s most customizable, rugged and high-density solution to date. Designed for the fiber optic field transport of composite, HD video, PL, IFB, audio and more, the LiGHTCuBE can be configured for as many as 80 HD-SDI, SDI or composite video paths, with 225 AES or analog audio channels. The LiGHTCuBE is also compatible with DVI, RGB and HDMI and is AC and fully battery powered.

In addition, the new test and monitor features make the LiGHTCuBE especially effective for in-the-field signal monitoring. With an HD monitor and signal generator on either end of the product, users can test the circuit even if the camera has not arrived. Further, the HD test signal generator option also allows users to send the test pattern down the line, or to send the signal from the studio end directly to the LiGHTCuBE. This function allows users to monitor the camera output and the signals arriving at the shoot, and can be added to any solution in MultiDyne’s LiGHTBoX product line.

“With our new LiGHTCuBE, the options for the end-user are virtually limitless,” says Frank Jachetta, senior vice president of sales and operations for MultiDyne. “Not only does the LiGHTCuBE hold more HD, analog video and audio signals than any other solution in our product line, it is also extremely customizable, even by the end-user. Our new test and monitor features provide even more value. Customers who were creating their own makeshift flyaway case to house many video signals will finally have access to a smaller, cost-effective and extremely high-quality solution for all their fiber optic transport needs.”

A major benefit also lies in the LiGHTCuBE’s size. Though this solution is heavy on HD and audio signals, the LiGHTCuBEv is a compact and extremely portable 14-inch cube design, making it small enough for sports and ENG, an announce booth setting, as well as any field application where signal density is a must. Additional carry handles allow users to “grab-and-go” for remote or on-location broadcasts. A weather resistant cover is also available.

The LiGHTCuBE is exceptionally versatile and can be used in a number of different broadcast and pro A/V situations. It is ideal for applications including large-scale outdoor arena sporting events where a user requires a rugged, highly weather-proof solution for handling massive amounts of HD signals. The LiGHTCuBE is also a perfect fit for users transporting high-density audio; for example, in a live symphony or orchestra broadcast setting with over 60 microphones, the LiGHTCuBE can manage audio bottlenecks, transporting signals seamlessly to an OB van or studio.

The LiGHTCuBE can be linked using tactical or conventional fiber to any MultiDyne solution, including the DVM-2500, HD-1500, HD-3000, HDMI-ONE, DVI-6000 as well as many non-MultiDyne products. In addition, the LiGHTCuBE offers users intercom, PL, IFB and belt pack support.  For more information on the LiGHTCuBE and its optional test and monitor features, please visit the MultiDyne website at: http://www.multidyne.com/productdetail.cfm?ProductID=247.

IABM Members Speak 2 – Frank Jachetta

July 31st, 2009

Frank Jachetta of MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems

Frank Jachetta of MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems

Frank Jachetta – Senior VP of Sales and Operations
MultiDyne Video and Fiber Optic Systems

Frank, can you first fill us in on your background?

I hold a Bachelors degree in computer science and started in the industry as a circuit board designer and firmware developer. I have transitioned into a sales and operations position, but still enjoy being involved in product development.

What is the history of MultiDyne?

My father Vincent started MultiDyne in 1977 by building the first portable colour bar generator. MultiDyne then went on to create the first hand held signal generator. Our signal distribution background started with long-haul, cable equalizing DAs and has now evolved into a full line of fibre optic transport products.

What are the main product lines of MultiDyne?

MultiDyne comes from a broadcast background, but as convergence becomes a reality, many of our products carry over or focus on pro-AV, high end surveillance, intelligent traffic systems, military, government and simulation.

Our focus is high quality, point to point fibre optic transport. We can transport virtually any signal over fibre optic cable including composite, component and HDSDI video, high resolution graphics such as DVI dual link and RGB, AES and analogue audio, and much more.  Another product line is the field rugged, fibre optic transport working in conjunction with our tactical cable assemblies. In fact, the LiGHTBoX 1150 won two awards at IBC in 2008.

Which applications represent the current “sweet spot”?

I would have to say the optical router (EOS-4000) in conjunction with the DVI/RGB Fibre Link (DVI-6000).   When these two are installed in concert, it is no longer just a point to point device, we can distribute from one point to many points, such as multiple screens with the same content. Or, with a touch of the remote control, different images can be displayed on each of those same screens. DVI, DVI-DL, NTSC, PAL, RGB or YPbPr can be transported over the same link, so regardless of the source and destination signal requirements, one device can carry any of these signals. Audio also comes along for the ride and soon, USB!

Fibre optics is clearly a main component, how has this evolved in recent years?

With the advent of HDSDI and its tremendous proliferation, fibre has moved from being a luxury to becoming a necessity. Depending on cable types, HDSDI can only travel a few hundred feet over copper. This removes the option of copper from even a large room, not to mention a building, campus or metro area.

Does fibre compete favourably with copper?

Until it became a necessity, copper was more favourable due to fibre’s higher cost and fibre frailty. Fibre also had a stigma of being too difficult to terminate. However, with the increasing cost of copper, rugged tactical fibre and field termination kits, fibre has become more favourable than copper. In fact I was onsite for a railroad installation, standing in a tent on a windy winter day while the technician there terminated ST connectors onto fibre in a matter of seconds!

What future do you see for 3G transport?

Of course one day 3G will go the way of the VCR and vinyl records, but for now, the future of 3G transport is bright. The higher resolution 3G or 1080p HDTV is supported by many consumer displays and has proliferated into broadcast productions. 3G can be used to transport dual link HDSDI by multiplexing two 1.5G HDSDI streams into one 3G stream for digital cinema.  3G or HDTV 1080P is also used in sports and television productions. The 3G HD signal format is often used as the transport format of choice. Various types of signals are converted to and from the 3G format. This holds true for our DVI/RGB fibre link which converts DVI to 3G for transport or cross conversion. This way the 3G can pass through other 3G devices and routers easily, before it is converted back to DVI or simply left in its new 3G form.

How has the current business climate affected you?

I feel as an industry, even outside of fibre, we are all very blessed by the explosive growth of high resolution video content and the need to distribute it. With the mandates of changing over to HD, all the new video services that consumers have available and are willing to purchase and the proliferation of multimedia into all aspects of life, I am cautiously optimistic that our industry will not just weather these difficult times, but thrive.

Would you like to make a few predictions about the future of the media industry once the financial crisis is behind us?

Although the word convergence has become a cliché, I feel this is our future. When a single broadband conduit is brought to the home it will not just bring voice data and video, but will bring on demand services of very specialized content as easily as accessing a web site. When you can access various HD camera views at will, while watching baseball; when you can shop interactively, or take a real-time virtual walk through the summerhouse you are about to rent 3000 miles away, this is the future.

Current on demand and fibre to the home are a glimpse of what’s to come, but as the economy improves and the infrastructure is expanded, these services will quickly become reality. Of course, the broadband conduit to the home will be fibre.

MultiDyne Debuts HDMI-ONE, a Low-Cost HDMI and DVI Fiber Link at InfoComm 2009

June 11th, 2009
HDMI-one HDMI and DVI fiber optic link with HDCP and EDID support

HDMI-one HDMI and DVI fiber optic link with HDCP and EDID support

Compatible with All HDMI Sources; Includes HDCP Copyright Protection Support

ORLANDO, FL, JUNE 10, 2009 – MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, a premier provider of fiber-optic-based video and audio transport solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, is introducing the HDMI-ONE, a low-cost HDMI™ and DVI fiber link with HDCP copyright protection support, at this year’s InfoComm (Booth 4629). Designed to extend HDMI and DVI distance limitations, this cost-effective solution is the first to offer users bi-directional communication over ONE fiber for full HDCP copyright and EDID functionality.

Recognizing the need for high-resolution graphics and video image transfer over long distances, MultiDyne’s HDMI-ONE focuses on maximizing visual quality, with pixel-for-pixel image transport and a 100 percent 24-bit scan rate and no contouring or bit reduction. The fully un-compressed HDMI or DVI-D signal is transported over ONE fiber supporting WUXGA up to 1920×1200 and is 100 percent transparent with no frame dropping. MultiDyne’s HDMI-ONE also responds to market demand for a locking HDMI-connector, seamlessly transporting the HDCP and EDID information along with the HDMI or DVI video signal.

DVI signals are supported by the HDMI-ONE with the use of a hybrid cable adapter. When the HDMI-ONE is used to transport DVI signals, the HDCP and EDID information is transported seamlessly from the monitor to the video source despite the use of hybrid adapter cables. The product also allows transmissions of up to 1000 meters over multimode fiber and ensures that the HDCP encoding remains intact and unmodified throughout the entire process.

“HD has already taken over as the standard for broadcast markets and as a result the transport of DVI and HDMI copyright protected material has become more important for the AV, home theater and permanent installation markets,” says Jim Jachetta, senior vice president of engineering. “With the HDMI-ONE, users can now send video from a DVD or Blu-ray player to a monitor or display up to 1000 meters away. Reliable HDCP copyright protection support has not been available over a single multimode fiber until now.”

This new offering targeted at HDMI users is compatible with all HDMI compliant sources and monitors, while continuing to maintain the original electrical HDMI signal. Designed to support all possible horizontal and vertical sync configurations, it also includes built-in security features for secure video and audio communications in command and control facilities.  The lack of EMI characteristics also makes the HDMI-ONE ideal for medical instruments and airborne applications.   The HDMI-ONE includes external power supplies and a USB power port. Alternatively, a free USB port can be used from the video source to power the HDMI-ONE transmitter and a USB port on the monitor can power the HDMI-ONE receiver, eliminating the need for two external power supplies.   MultiDyne’s new HDMI and DVI fiber link can be configured for a wide variety of applications including medical and MRI displays, advertising and signage, sporting and concert video displays, video walls, digital cinema, radar displays, air traffic control, military information and displays as well as in the commodity and stock exchanges.
